If you could only take three things with you when you had to move to a new city, what three things would you pack?
That was a tough question that the kids were asked on Sunday, and many responded with food, water, stuffies, candy, and screens. But I tossed my pen in the air, clapped my hands together and praised God with a loud Alleluia when Abby responded at lightning speed, “GOD, JESUS, and the HOLY SPIRIT!”
Her faithfulness to God resounded in her trusting, bold, and spot-on answer! With her quick answer, she has shown that she has soaked in all that she has been taught, that in fact, all one needs is God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. It made me start to wonder if an adult would have come up with that answer. Are we so worried about planning, providing, owning, and dragging along our things that we get so bogged down that we leave no room for God to guide our way and provide for us like He so lovingly wants to do?
Our scripture comes from Genesis 12:1-5 and 17:1-7, where we read about God’s promise to Abraham to make him a father of many nations and that his descendants would outnumber the stars in the sky and include kings among them, as well as our Savior, Jesus Christ; in order to receive that blessing, all Abraham had to do was obey God’s will and way and move his family to an unknown nation, Canaan. Spoiler alert: Abraham indeed chose God’s way and was blessed with a son, whose descendants multiplied and were blessed by God.
How was it so easy for Abram to receive God’s call and follow through obeying God’s will and way? Did he have a childlike faith that was without doubt, hesitation, mistrust or fear? Abram certainly did not let comfort and security of his present situation allow him to miss out on greater opportunities that God had waiting for him. So, my challenge to you is to reflect on what you would pack if God called you immediately away from your comfort zone, and if in fact, you would respond to His call with a childlike faith and obedience and follow His perfect plan.
