Reflections + Resolutions

On Saturday, August 9th, a wonderful group of 35 leaders and members gathered for a meaningful time of leadership, reflection, and discernment as we seek to move forward with purpose and grace.
Thank you to everyone who invested their morning with us! I pray it was filled with laughter, deep reflection, and the kind of conversation that not only honors what feels right but also lifts up the needs of our entire church family—both present and future.
During the gathering, we took time for personal and table reflections. The insights shared were truly enlightening! We collected stories and ideas about how we help one another feel connected and valued, what brings us back week after week, what motivates us, and when we struggle. We also explored ways each of us can encourage others to take ownership and love the incredible work God is doing here. I’m currently transcribing all this rich feedback and will share it soon with our staff, committees, teams, and the entire congregation. Keep an eye out for it—it’s full of heartfelt stories and challenges that will inspire us all.
We also gathered valuable input on resources and stewardship—covering midyear campaigns, pledges, and generosity efforts. This information will be shared with our Finance and Generosity teams, the Session, and you, our church family.
Most importantly, we faced a reality we can’t ignore: doing nothing about worship is not an option. Worship is the heart of who we are.
Our 2022 congregation survey affirmed that spirit-filled worship is our greatest strength—but we also struggle with declining attendance, limited resources, and a sense of disconnection between our three services. This fragmentation is holding us back, and to continue as we are risks stagnation.
As your pastor, I shared my informed opinion: we must either strengthen our commitment to the current three services or consider something new entirely. After prayerful discussion, a supermajority (93%) voted to move toward one unified worship service. This was a resolution—a shared intent, not a final decision, there is still a lot to consider. Think of it like choosing a recipe while still leaving room to adjust the ingredients along the way.
Some voices suggested exploring two services instead—one blending traditional and contemporary elements, and an early contemplative service inviting deep reflection and participation. All ideas are welcome and will be part of our ongoing conversation.
Next steps: I will present this resolution to the Session at the end of August and propose forming a task force to guide this journey. The task force will meet regularly, I dare say weekly, and keep everyone informed. If you feel called to serve on this important team, please email me at pastor@fpceustis.com. We’re looking for six members at large plus the chairs of committees, teams, music, children’s ministry, and technology staff.
Please know I am here for your questions and feedback. Your voice matters deeply, and we are committed to getting this right as we embrace what God is doing next in our church family. Let us pray for wisdom, unity, and courage as we move forward together!
With love and gratitude,
Pastor Mario Bolivar
