Tres Caballeros, One Lord.

No, I am not talking about The Three Caballeros (1944), an American live-action and animated movie from Disney that features Donald Duck's adventures through parts of Latin America. I am talking about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (Daniel 3) and how they faced the furnace's heat. A living hell. A furnace so hot that it killed the aggressors and let those in power acknowledge the reality of the triune God.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, the tres caballeros of this reflection, were thrown into the flames because of their steadfast faith in God, refusing to bow down to a false idol.

They chose to trust God and even had the faith to say... "But even if He [God] doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.” Daniel 3:18

It’s essential to remember that God did not put them in the furnace. However, it is live giving to acknowledge that Jesus appeared in the fire with them. This presence was transformative, everlasting, and redeeming. The faith and commitment of the tres caballeros had nothing to do with the outcome.

Despite the intense heat from the flames, the tres caballeros emerged without a single hair singed, their clothes untouched, and they didn’t even carry the scent of smoke. This miraculous company and familiarity ought to be a lesson to acknowledge today. Especially when there is so much rhetoric of fear in the updates and news.

From a psychological perspective, facing trials and adversity can lead to significant stress and feelings of isolation. However, studies have shown that knowing you are not alone can dramatically improve resilience and well-being. The concept of social support—knowing that others are with you in difficult times—is crucial for emotional health and recovery.

Brené Brown, a renowned researcher on vulnerability and courage, says, “Staying vulnerable is a risk we have to take if we want to experience connection.” This reminds us that vulnerability, like the trials faced by Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, is a part of the human experience.

It’s in these moments of vulnerability that we often discover the depth of God’s presence and support.

The story teaches us that God’s miracles are not about avoiding the bad, the terrible, or the evil of this world. Instead, they are about ensuring that we are never alone in our trials. Our faith is not about escaping difficulties but about finding God with us in the midst of them. Just as the Lord was present with the three in the fire, He is with us in our struggles, providing us with the strength to endure.

Now that that is established consider these three questions.

  1. What “fiery furnaces” are you currently facing in your life, and how does knowing that Jesus is with you change your perspective on these challenges?

  2. How can you become more aware of God’s presence in my daily struggles, and how can this awareness strengthen your faith?

  3. How can you offer support to others who are facing their own “fiery furnaces,” and what practical steps can you take to show them they are not alone?

Furthermore, consider reading Isaiah 43:2: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”

This verse reinforces that God is with us through every trial, ensuring we are not consumed by our difficulties.

As a practical step this week, reach out to someone you know who is going through a tough time. Offer a listening ear, a word of encouragement, or a small act of kindness. Let them know they are not alone and God’s presence is with them. This simple act of support can make a significant difference in someone’s life and embody the comfort and strength we find in Christ.
