Humble Phrases for Faith

Have you ever had one of those days where you realize you've been completely wrong about something? It's like finding out the "world's best pizza" is just a glorified frozen dinner. We've all been there! The good news is that growth and learning are part of the journey, and sometimes, embracing our mistakes is the glue of it all.

In our Christian walk, being open to change and growth is crucial. Just like the Apostle Paul said he was "pressing on to reach the end of the race" (Philippians 3:14), we, too, are called to continually evolve in our understanding and faith, and there is no better ground for growth than our failures. To help us on this journey, consider integrating some of these powerful phrases into your daily conversations; after all, to model repentance is a great testimony for those paying attention.

Let us learn to say this aloud...

1. "In light of that new information, I have changed my mind."

Just as our faith evolves, so does our understanding. We’re encouraged to renew our minds (Romans 12:2) and embrace new truths as they unfold.

2. "Oh, I didn’t know that before. I guess I was wrong."

Embracing our errors with humility reflects our reliance on God’s wisdom over our own (Proverbs 3:7). It’s a chance to grow and learn from our missteps.

3. "From the evidence provided, it appears that I need to rethink things."

Testing and discerning the truth is part of our spiritual journey (1 Thessalonians 5:21). Being willing to reconsider our views allows us to align more closely with God’s will.

4. "You make a strong argument; I’ll consider what you said." (My all-time favorite)

Listening to others and valuing their perspectives aligns with the command to love our neighbors (Mark 12:31). It’s a way to engage respectfully and learn from those around us.

5. "I can't support my opinion; I don’t know why I think that."

Acknowledging our uncertainties invites us to seek God’s clarity and wisdom (James 1:5). It opens us to growth and deeper understanding. Walk away from faith as certainty, and move towards faith as a journey of acknowledgment.

6. "I never thought of it that way. Thank you. Now I will."

Embracing new viewpoints enriches our communal faith journey (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). It celebrates the diversity of wisdom within the body of Christ.

Choosing even one of these phrases can help transform our interactions and deepen our faith. As we navigate our spiritual growth, let’s remember the Serenity Prayer, which perfectly captures our need for grace and guidance: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.”

May we embody these principles in our lives, growing in humility and grace as we journey together in faith.

Count it all joy,
