Now Preaching, Begins Sept 22

Beyond the Fish, Nineveh, and the Worm: Going Beyond the Familiar Tale

By Pastor Mario Bolivar

As we prepare to gather for worship beginning September 22, we invite you to embark on a transformative journey through the Book of Jonah with us, Chapter by Chapter. This text offers challenging insights for our lives today; if you dare to go beyond the Familiar tale.

We live in a chaotic and divided world; Jonah’s story provides hope, purpose, and connection within our faith community.

Our new sermon series, "Beyond the Fish, Niniveh and the Worm," will take us deep into each chapter of Jonah's narrative over the next four Sundays (from Sept 22nd to Oct 13th). It will help uncover profound truths (From the Depths) that challenge and inspire us in unexpected ways, moving beyond familiar interpretations.

Each Sunday, we will explore how God's mercy, justice, and grace resonate throughout Jonah's journey. This series invites us to revisit the story chapter by chapter, encouraging us to embrace transformative perspectives that can enrich our understanding and deepen our faith. Join us as we discover fresh meanings and insights together!

September 22nd - Chapter 1: Facing Uncomfortable Truths

In the opening chapter, we witness Jonah’s flight to Tarshish, representing our instinct to avoid difficult responsibilities. Just as Jonah faced a storm, we, too, encounter turbulence when we evade our calling. Here are some questions to ponder. Consider these thoughts as we explore the First Chapter.

1. What does Jonah’s decision to flee reveal about our tendency to avoid difficult truths?

2. How can the storms in our lives serve as metaphors for internal struggles?

3. What might our personal “Tarshish” look like?

4. How do we react to those around us who are wrestling with their own challenges?

5. What impact does one person’s disobedience have on a larger community?

September 29th - Chapter 2: Finding Strength in Reflection

Jonah’s time in the fish signifies a pause for introspection, three days and three night. This moment is an opportunity for personal reflection and renewal. Consider these thoughts as we explore Chapter II.

1. How can we find strength in our own “fish moments”?

2. What does Jonah’s prayer teach us about God’s mercy, even in crisis?

3. How can vulnerability lead to growth in our lives?

4. What does Jonah's experience reveal about redefining success and failure?

5. How does this chapter encourage us to embrace moments of solitude for self-discovery?

October 6th - Chapter 3: Reconciliation and Community Healing

Nineveh’s swift response to Jonah’s message exemplifies the power of collective action and transformation. Consider these thoughts as we explore Chapter III.

1. What lessons can we learn from Nineveh about the potential for change?

2. How can we apply the principles of repentance to heal societal divisions?

3. What role do prophetic voices play in our lives today?

4. How can we foster environments that promote openness to difficult messages?

5. In what ways can we engage in collective efforts to bring about healing?

October 13th - Chapter 4: Embracing And Expanding Perspectives

In the final chapter, Jonah grapples with God’s mercy towards Nineveh, prompting us to examine our own perspectives. Reflect on these questions:

1. What does Jonah’s anger reveal about his understanding of justice and grace?

2. How can this chapter challenge us to confront our assumptions?

3. Who do we believe is "worthy" of forgiveness, and how does that reflect on our character?

4. What broader themes of inclusion can we draw from Jonah’s experience?

5. What can we learn about humility from Jonah that can enhance our relationships with others?

Beloved Chruch -- Join Us on This Journey (Do the Homework!)

As we dive into Jonah’s story over the coming weeks, we’ll explore how to look beyond the fish (the monsters that loom large in our lives), Nineveh (the places we wish to avoid), and the worms (the small yet significant elements that shape reality).

This journey through Jonah invites you to deepen your understanding of faith, reflect on your own life, and connect with our community in meaningful ways. Let’s come together to seek guidance, find renewal, foster reconciliation, and embrace the diversity of our experiences. We hope to see you in worship as we embark on this transformative journey together!
